How to make a budget diy dolly for video making, film making and photography part 3
This part (part 3) of how to make a budget diy dolly for video making, film making and photography explains where to buy the pole for the dolly and how to fit it to the base of the dolly.
What is a dolly in a video, film making and photography context?
A dolly is a stand or support which can support video cameras, camcorders, studio lights and just about anything else on the film set or in the photography studio.
The main advantage of using a dolly is that it can quickly and easily be moved around the film set or photography studio, because it runs on wheels or sometimes on a length of track.
How to make a budget diy dolly for video, film making and photography revisited
In this budget diy film making project the wheels and base of the dolly are provided by an office chair which was converted into a dolly, as explained in how to make a budget diy dolly for video making, film making and photography and how to make a budget diy dolly for video making, film making and photography part 2
It has swivel wheels, and this is essential when you are looking around for an office chair – it has to have swivel wheels.
About the pole for the budget diy film making and photography dolly
The pole is just a length of metal tube, the kind which outdoor TV aerials and satellite dishes are fixed to. You can usually buy them at electrical wholesalers, the kind that supply electrical equipment for electricians.
These poles don’t cost too much, and if you can also get hold of a free or cheap office chair you can build a diy budget dolly like this for a very low price.
The poles are usually 30 mm in diameter, which fits inside the metal tube of most office chairs (see previous posts.)
They are usually supplied in 3 metre (about 9 feet) lengths, which is long enough and high enough to support the video camera/camcorder, camera or studio lighting at a good height.
How to solve a possible problem with the budget diy film making and photography dolly
You might notice that there’s a slight gap between the pole and the metal tube of the office chair.
This isn’t a problem, the dolly can still be moved around easily.
At some point I might fill the gap with car body filler.
In a future post
In a future post I’ll explain how to fix your equipment ie. your video camera, camcorder, video lights, photography studio lights whatever, to the budget diy dolly for video making, film making and photography.
This can be quite a challenge, but it can also save you a lot of money.
