Messing around with location shooting and sound effects

This film making techniques article looks at the idea of shooting the exterior of a location as a long shot and using this with a sound effect that was recorded in the interior of that location.

This means that the sound effect isn’t obviously coming from that location, it’s being associated with it.
I used the technique in my short film ‘A Christian Civilisation.’ I shot a long shot of an amusement park, and used the sound effect  of a bingo caller and slot machines being played somewhere in the amusement park in the video clip.
The sound effect of the bingo caller and slot machines being played isn’t obviously coming from the amusement park – it’s being associated with the amusement park.

A film making technique too far?

In effect, the people that watch the video or short film are being asked to associate the location with the sound effect.
They might be able to do this, they might be willing to do this, but they might not.
In other words, you’re taking a chance when you use this film making technique.
You are taking a chance that it will be effective, that it will work.
